why clean beauty is important for your health & our planet

For starters, I am not a make up person by any means. I just found out what highlighter was last summer and I still don’t really know how to do my eyebrows… but I do my best! I started to focus on clean beauty (as in natural and ethical ingredients) last February when I first went vegan. My main concern at that time was making sure all of my products were vegan. Little did I know that by switching over to clean vegan beauty not only was I going to be lessening the amount of ecologically toxic chemicals going into out oceans and rivers BUT my skin was going to change drastically… for the better!

I have struggled with breakouts and occasional cystic acne since I was 15. Like most people, I have tried just about everything as far as natural ways to help clean your skin and nothing helped my skin as much as changing my makeup. Being that I was 22 when I made the switch.. that was 7 years of putting toxic chemical directly into my pores and then washing them into the environment. But that’s enough about me… let’s get to the point!

Regular makeup is not only bad for your skin but its toxic to our planet. I don’t want to bombard you with negative things about makeup but I do feel there are some things that are important.  Here is a list of common chemicals found in make up and beauty products that are bad for you and the environment:

  • Parabens
  • Synthetic Color
  • “Fragrance”
  • Phthalates
  • Tricolson
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).
  • Formaldehyde
  • Toluene
  • Propylene glycol
  • Sunscreen chemicals.(benzophenone, PABA, avobenzone, homosalate and ethoxycinnmate.)

The list goes on about the negative effects these chemicals have on our bodies. Among these are that they:  disrupt hormones, are carcinogenic, cause skin irritants,  have been linked to behavioral problems, endocrine/thyroid disrupting, kidney & respiratory damage, immune system disrupting/toxicity, dermatitis, hives, etc, etc, etc.

As for the environment... these chemicals diminish plankton in our oceans, cause genetic mutations in amphibians, kill microorganisms and entire ecosystems of bacteria and fungus that are crucial to ecosystems.. and again the list goes on and on.

After doing my own research for a brand that I could trust, I found an absolutely amazing brand called 100% Pure. I clicked around, checking out all they had to offer, reading about the founder, the ingredients and the company in general. Their website states their purpose perfectly:

 I was of course hesitant at first. Over the years I have found that certain “natural” products didn’t quite work as well as my chemical filled ones. Being that my skin does still break out, I was nervous about making the switch for the fear that my new products wouldn’t be able to cover my blemishes. So I started small. My first purchase wasFruit Pigmented® Healthy Foundation – Peach Bisque .  At the time they didn’t have any samples left so I sent in a picture of my face without makeup on in natural lighting and they had a professional match my skin tone to the right foundation.

Prior to making the switch, I had used FIT ME matte foundation. I explained to one of their professionals that it gave me great coverage with a natural finish so that is what I was looking for in my next foundation. If you check out the site  you will see that they have a lot of different options. The fact that I was able to chat and email back and forth with someone made the whole process really enjoyable. We all know that it can be difficult to fully commit when we purchase certain things online.

IMG_5904Once I received my foundation in the mail the moment of truth came. I washed my face and applied as I usual do… & I was honestly blown away! Not only was it my shade but it was the exact coverage I was looking for. The other reasons why I love this product are:

  • It looks great (on my face but also the bottle is lovely)
  • It has a pump which means you get every last drop in the bottle
  • ITS CLEAN!

Once I fell in love with this foundation I decided to give some of their other products a try. I listed some of my favorites below!

  1. Luminous Primer: gives a soft and subtle dewy look, great for anyone with combination skin. They also have a matte finish but the reviews all said this one was better!
  2. Eye Shadow Palette: I don’t wear eyeshadow often but i love these neutral tones.
  3. Lipstick: I got this for free (another plus is they have deals all the time and a great rewards program!) I haven’t tried it yet but I bought a friend one for christmas and she loves it! I will be sure to update the post once I try it.
  4. Mascara: This is another new purchase… in the past I have used Pacifica Dream Big Lash Extending (which I loved) so I will let you guys know how this compares!
  5. Bronzer: I finally splurged on this since summer is coming up, I haven’t had a chance to use it but I love that the first ingredient is cocoa!
Other things I have tired that aren’t pictured:
For those of you who don’t like as much coverage the 2nd skin foundation is absolutely lovely. I am hoping within a few months I will be able to transition over! I ordered the 4 sample packs to text out which matched my skin the best. It was like putting on liquid gold, a nice sheer coverage but really smooths out the skin.

Please note that by no means does this mean that you should stop wearing the makeup that you love. We all deserve to do things that make us feel beautiful and that bring us joy! If you want to make some changes, start small. I think that it can very overwhelming today to try to always do what is right and healthy for our body. But that being said, it is still important to pay attention to what we put on our bodies just as much as we pay attention to what we put in our bodies!

the life of a holistic nurse

For those of you who are nurses or know a nurse you may be confused… aren’t all nurses holistic? The answer is yes! Nurses are known for caring in a way that encompasses the “whole” patient. Think Florence Nightingale, Martha Rogers, Jean WatsonVirginia HendersonDorothea E. OremBetty Neuman and many others. I wont bore you with a history lesson but I highly recommend checking out these ladies and all that they contributed to nursing and healthcare!

Nurses are voted time and time again as the the most trusted profession and with good reason! It is a tricky juggle being both at the bedside of our patients as well as behind the scenes. Its without saying that being a nurse consists of fulfilling so many duties. Unfortunately with that, in this day and age, the added stress and pressure placed on nurses doesn’t allow us to do all that we wish we could for our patients.

So that being said, what is a “Holistic Nurse” and what can it offer for patients, hospitals, the world & the even the nurses themselves? 

In a few points, a Holistic nurse is someone who:

  • is self aware
  • practices self-care
  • strives for personal growth (spiritual, physical, financial, etc)
  • recognizes and overcomes personal beliefs and possible biases that could effect the care given to patients of different backgrounds and cultures.
  • sees everyone as mindbodyspirit, understanding that there is no separation
  • being a facilitator of healing, understanding that YOU do not heal patients. Your goal is to allow the patient to reach a state of wellbeing where their body heals itself. NO ONE CAN HEAL SOMEONE ELSE- your body is the only thing that can heal your body.
  • Offers Complementary, Alternative & Integrative Modalities:
    • Meditation / Guided Imagery
    • Ear Seeds
    • Breath-work
    • Mindful Presence
    • M-technique
    • Herbs & Supplemental Advice
    • Nutritional Advice
    • Aromatherapy
    • Energy Healing & Energy Assessing
    • Music Therapy
    • Exercise & Movement
    • any other modality that promotes overall wellbeing

There is not one clear cut definition of a holistic nurse but some of these bullet points listed above are things that we strive for. If you notice I have bolded, underlined  and italicized the phrase mindful presence.  This is so important for so many reasons but the main reason is because there is no perfect facility or speciality for a holistic nurse to work. While there are hospitals and doctors offices that are becoming more innovative and adapting and promoting holistic, complementary, alternative and integrative medicine… we still have a long way to go.

Mindful presence is something that we can offer, not only as nurses but also as people in our everyday lives! It is essentially utilizing mindfulness, allowing us to be present in all that we do. As nurses we often are in and out of patients rooms and the reasons why we are in their rooms in the first place is because we are giving them medication, following up on a pain assessment or answering a call bell!

Imagine if in those moments, you stopped and recognized that this point in time and this interaction will never happen again. It truly is an honor to be in someones life at such a crucial and often times scary time. Be present, take a deep breath, look your patient in their eyes and ask them genuinely “How are you doing today?”. It can be as simple as that.

There are a lot of great articles that touch on mindfulness in nursing. Stating that it can help your assessment skills as well as allow you to build a better communication with your patients and even decreases your chances of burning out. The Future of Healthcare

At my graduation we had Dr. Ben Kligler MD MPH speak. While I appreciated the motivational portion of his speech, what stuck with me more was the fact that he said 2017-2018 will be known as the year that conventional medicine finally recognizes the need for holistic, complementary, alternative and integrative medicine.

The Joint Commission which is “an independent, not-for-profit organization, that accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care and whose accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.” is also on board with alternative ways for care. For anyone who works in healthcare we know that this is HUGE. As of February 2018,  JC now requires hospitals to provide at least one non-pharmacological pain treatment modality! While it may only be a start, this is a step in the right direction.

As far as what I hope the future of healthcare, it is simply providing patients with choices, information, wellness and quality of life. Patients should be educated, informed and actively participate in their health and their future. We educate our patients on medications and procedures but do we ever explain health promotion practices that can be done in conjunction (complimentary) with conventional medicine? There is a wealth of information and options for everyone, be it a patient in the hospital or not.
